Xantrex 851-0400 XPower 400 Plus Compact Inverter

Attention! Attention! This is a genuine Guyville giddy moment. There are certain products that we like to talk about and recommend and there are certain products that just don't make the grade. Occasionally, however, we feel it necessary to grab the bull (that's you, the reader) by the horns (that's a metaphorical term, since you don't have horns) and say, "You have got to check this item out!" This is one of those times.

Don't let the name fool you. The Xantrex 851-0400 XPower Compact Inverter may not have the flashy and cool name to attract you, but I love this item. Everyone has a car (at least in California) and everyone would love to have the opportunity to plug in various electronic items without having to plug into your cigarette lighter, because let's face it, we can't plug our computer into our cigarette lighter. We can't blow dry our hair while trying to make an important appointment with our cigarette lighter. I can think of a hundred instances where I would loved to have had a normal outlet, scores of which we have in our home, in my car so I could plug stuff in to it. That is what the Xantrex does. It has a plug that connects to your cigarette lighter and an on/off switch coupled with not one but TWO regular outlets that provides up to 400 watts of AC power. If you are like me and feel the need to charge all of your video camera batteries while you make your Hitchcockesque films, you might fear that you'd run your car battery empty. The Xantrex has a sensor that will automatically sense if your car battery is low and will shut down. How is that for smart? There is no better guy gift for this holiday season, or any occasion for that matter. If useful and pragmatic is your man's middle name than nothing screams 'gift for manly man' that this. Although one danger might be if he could run all of his power tools straight from his car, what would he need a house for?
