Gadgets: Apple owns like no other
Posted September 5, 2007 11:22 AM
Steve Jobs held a special event today presenting Apple's productions and plans concerning the iPod and the digital music movement. Apparently Apple is owning, or at least beginning to, in sales of music. How about throwing out some facts and figures, courtesy of Ryan Block over at engadget, so everyone can get an idea: 600 million copies of iTunes distributed, over 3 billion songs purchased on iTunes, and 95 million TV shows purchased. Freaking amazing, but I guess it makes sense seeing as 32% of the music sales last year were solely digital. So if you're thinking that Apple doesn't deserve all these easy sales well start changing your mind. Already shipped out are their new line of iPods which should be available within the week. So, starting at the bottom, the iPod shuffle remains unchanged, however a RED shuffle was added to support the fight against the diseases in Africa. Next in line is the iPod nano with some big tech upgrades. No longer the long, sleek deals, they are now the squarish, sleek deals. With a new two inch big screen for videos, multiple colors, and extended battery life (24 hours for audio and 5 for vids) it really wont matter whether you get the 4 gig or the 8 gig, however Apple is definitely encouraging you to get the $199 8 gig nano being that it's only 50 bucks over the 4 gig. But if you have the bank for great music capabilities you're definitely going to want to get one of the iPod classics. Not only is there an improved 80 gig being thinner with up to 40 hours of audio and 7 of video, there's also a 160 gig (yes one hundred and sixty gigabytes of musical glory), which has the same battery life and is only slightly thicker. Amazing, I know, but not the end. Apple is also introducing the new iPod touch which is basically just a stripped down iPhone but with some cool features. It's about the same size with the 3.5 inch touch widescreen display and has the Cover Flow music browsing, however it is only 8 mm thick and features an 802.11 B/G WiFi antenna with the safari browser. Not to forget the 22 hours of audio and 5 for video, as well as being offered in 8 gig and 16 gig styles, priced at $299 and $399, respectively. Definitely an awesome little machine though, and having WiFi in the pocket will definitely be worth having everything else gone from them.. Speaking of gone from your pockets, one final addition to this brown-nosed tirade on Apple, ringtones on the iPhone. "Oh cool they're offering custom ringtones!" Yes, yes they are, except after you purchase the song from iTunes you also have to drop another buck to make a 30 second ringtone. Now, thinking back to those huge sales numbers brought up earlier, I wonder how Apple was able to lower the prices on their products... BUY APPLE STOCK!!!
