Random: Halloween Screams And Shivers, On Film

Posted October 24, 2007 9:26 AM

Movie time for fright night (not the movie, definitely not scary though there was that scene from his bedroom to his neighbors..) is always a time to be sure. There are plenty of purely gory movies out there and plenty suspenseful ones too, but finding that balance between the two is what makes a great scary movie.

Finding movies short of watching them is hard too sometimes with all the rankings for "Most Frightening Films" or whatever so we decided to put together a few guy favorites and let you make up your own damned mind. Anyway go ahead and see what tickles your frightful fancy:

Halloween (1978) - just about the scariest movie. An escaped psychotic killer, has been since childhood, and he's out roaming the city with knives. You'll be scared.
Event Horizon (1997) - just pure evil. A sci-fi setting where the space ship warps out of existence and reappears years later. Needless to say a crew needs to go check it out, but things don't go right. Honestly though, it is pure evil.
Ju-on (2000) - there should always be one crazy Asian movie on any movie list so we chose Ju-on. It's got murders and ghosts and a house with new residents. Think The Grudge but a thousand times better. Unless you liked The Grudge, twits. Also the Japanese kick ass at horror. Other Asian countries do gore though if you dig that.
Children of the Corn (1984) - evil children running a town. That's what we like and what we definitely do not like. It's twisted and though the ending may not be solid enough it's still disturbing.
The Shining (1980) - haunted hotel in a remote region of the rockies with Jack Nicholson's eyebrows of death. Definitely one of Steven Kings better novel to movie renditions, but it's still missing the lawn animals. Overall a good film that's eerie and scary.
Rosemary's Baby (1968) - can anyone say rape? It's a horror movie so we'll let your imagination figure it out. Slightly older, but still a need to see if you haven't.
Dawn of the Dead (1978) - a great zombie movie with plenty of gore and gore and gore. It's a fun one to get a hold of if you love the blood.
The Exorcist (1973) - possession of a child and the attempts to exorcise her demon. Too bad it's Satan.
Session 9 (2001) - asbestos and an abandoned asylum make the setting of this film. Kind of slow, but with a good build-up and ending you'll enjoy it. It's insane.
The Brood (1979) - mutant children. Other stuff, but mutant children.

And if these ones can't cut it there are reviews for just about every horror movie you can think of here at absolutehorror.com
