Sports: What Kind Of Man Does It Take

Posted October 22, 2007 9:45 AM

Alright guys this is where we separate the men from the boys, American football and rugby. It might also be where we separate the muscle-heads from the purely insane, but that decision will be left to you. First let's go over the basics. Football is a contact sport played with pads and helmets where a select few get to carry the ball and usually only a couple per a play. Rugby, or more specifically union rugby, may involve pads and helmets, but all are strictly limited by the International Rugby Board. Any gear worn is constructed from cloth and foam and is intended only to protect collarbones and ears from cauliflower ear. Also any position can carry the ball, though that isn't the strategy, and the play keeps running so long as there aren't any infringements or scores.

However in both sports there are mouth guards being worn, a testament to the brutality these men throw at each other. Enough with the sport comparison, let's think about the men that play these sports. Football has evolved into a sport where the base idea is bigger, faster, stronger and that seems to have worked. Intense training and conditioning have made them the top of there game in college and the guys that get to the NFL deserve to be there. Let's just say that if there were ever a post-apocalypse medieval war those would be the guys you'd want on your side, maybe. That brings us right into rugby. Rugby players are tanks from the waist down and the shoulders up. Their upper bodies are relatively strong sure, but look at any rugby player and he'll have some of the most powerful legs around. As for above the shoulders well let's just say that any sport that islanders enjoy and love is one that is sure to be crazy.
