Random: Perfect, A Post-Rock Future

Posted November 13, 2007 9:18 AM

Post-rock has made a huge impact on today's music. A genre name that has fallen out of favor, but continues to describe the style nonetheless. The genre uses musical instruments commonly associated with rock music to create rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions that are not found in rock tradition. An easier way to look at it is the use of 'rock instrumentation' for non-rock purposes. If not already a fan, the music is perfect for any guy that likes to have good music always running in the background and really any guy with a taste for brilliantly composed music.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: This album, Yanqui U.X.O., is just one of five albums (though the first is impossible to find) that chart an uplifting and emotional journey through music in all of its breadth. Composed of half-hour long songs and brief clips of a few minutes Godspeed is honestly a pinnacle in musical achievement that anybody can listen to and love.

Explosions In The Sky: Another post-rock instrumentalist band, these guys are another amazing group to grace the scene. Not quite as epic as Godspeed, these guys might be liked a little more by any guys that have patience issues. They're just as relaxing and with a little more uplifting a style set. All in all a great band.

Sigur Rós: An Icelandic post-rock band that features classical and experimental elements, they are a unique band. Much of there older stuff is really good, but their newest release Hvarf-Heim is out of this world. Get it. Listen to it. Please. Don't get bent on them being Icelandic either, just take a look at all of the public appearances they've made.

Pelican: Taking post-rock to the next level, Pelican destroys with post-metal. It is a purely instrumental metal group, mainly for the fact that they can't find a voice that works with their music that won't possibly end up grouping them into a pop genre. Heavy and unique, guys that love metal will dig the crap out of Pelican.

With so many other post-rock and post-metal bands out there you can try some Mogwai, Isis, and Tortoise or look for more and check this list to find some that fit your own tastes. Also, if you don't already, you can get a better idea of what some of these guys sound like at Pandora.
