Crysis: A graphics intensive FPS where aliens are invading Earth and you, a soldier from an elite delta force, are the only one that can save everyone. The tactical play is amazing, something like SOCOM but try a lot better.
The Orange Box: Half-life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal make up this tri-pack of wonder. Fun to play on any system, but if you're a PC gamer it's definitely worth going that route. You can put the portal gun into Half-life 2 and play one insane game.
World In Conflict: Baaaahh this RTS game is ridiculous. Basically Russia is invading the US after the cold war instead of turning over and withering. Take a look at the video at the bottom to get an idea. (or here for gameplay)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: History and violence. It's happened and now you get to make it in this wild trip through out of control regimes in the Middle East and potential anarchy in the old Soviet Union. An amazing game all around.
Gears of War: This game plays out like a movie as you battle hordes of enemies in defense of all mankind. Amazing AI on this makes for fun with and without friends too.
