Money: Tips on Holiday Tipping

Posted December 6, 2007 12:42 PM

Yes, the holidays are a time of giving. Yes, giving is a nice thing to do. And yes, I do give. But me being nice and giving has nothing to do with the fact that I should. A tip is a little something extra on top what is already there, not a filler for a gap left by hourly wages. Those jack off business owners need to realize that tips are given for a job well done, not because you want it or need it. If everyone gave tips then the standards would lower and then people would be trying to get you to give even higher tips. Now how the heck does that sound like a good idea?

Maybe we should call a tip a bribe. After all it's our way of saying remember me next time I come into your establishment and so you can give me a better table and better service. Better yet lets call a tip a one up on the other guy who tipped you, because quite frankly we want to be the generous guy who tips the delivery guy more than the guy down the street. Well you can call me scrooge all you want, but that's what tips are becoming. In fact it's not just that the art of tipping is getting out of control, but rather the people who "deserve" tips are growing. Get a load of this list we found that's supposed to help you remember who you need to tip. Maybe these people should tip you for hiring them, after all you've got lots of other choices.

Frequent babysitter - 1 or 2 evenings pay + a small gift from the child
Ok maybe. But it's a bribe. I want my kid safe.

Barber - Cost of one cut + maybe a small gift
Happy holidays buddy, unfortunately since I'm tipping you so much I'll have to go without a cut this holiday season.

Beauty salon staff - $10 to $60 each
So glad I'm not a woman. Honey how about a divorce.

Day-care providers - $25 to $70 each (higher if only one or two providers) + a small gift from your child
I can understand this kind of tipping. Managing kids is a crazy job, but don't they also get paid for this?

Daily dog walker - One day's pay
Wow you got some exercise for once, Merry Christmas.

Frequent house cleaner - One day's pay
I always end up cleaning my place before you even come over..so where's my tip?

Massage therapist - One session's fee
I'll give you a holiday tip when you start giving me a holiday happy ending.

Newspaper deliverer - $10 to $30
Wait a minute aren't you the guy who throws my newspaper in the wet bushes every morning? Honestly do you really think you deserve a tip.

Private nurse - Gift, not cash
Just because you have to wipe my grandpa's ass doesn't mean you deserve a tip.

Nursing-home workers - Gift, not cash
Yes, no cash please. Then they might be able to retire and join the army of the feeble.

Pool cleaner - Cost of one cleaning
It's winter, how much work do you really need to do on my pool?

Guyville writers - $50 to $8008
I dunno, this tip just seems well earned. Right!!!?

Happy Holidays guys.
