Gadgets: 2008 CES Lowdown On Comcast And Others
Posted January 8, 2008 10:00 AM
Okay we get it, Comcast offers faster internet at an affordable price. They have the largest on-demand selection with about 90% of the material begin free. And now apparently that's all going to get WAY better. Introducing Comcast 3.0: it's faster. Unveiled this morning at the Consumer Electrics Show, it's going to offer even more in the way of on-demand, speed (with the new network of fiber optic cables), and, still, a portable DVR/DVD player (talked up yesterday at Panasonic's keynote) to carry around TV shows. And that's about it.
Now CES is an electronics show designed for consumers, but when does that mean companies can only release improved existing technology? Panasonic's big plasma screen, plasma wall or whatever that monstrosity was, and now Comcast has their 3.0 setup. These are each pretty cool, but why the heck do these companies need to showcase this stuff? It's not worth making a presentation on in the least, which is why these companies spend so much on advertising.
Blah give us something new, not just integration with other companies and their services.
Mitsubishi came out with a new laser-based HDTV. Nothing much more on that except that the prototype was unveiled. Good for them, something new that we don't know about. Literally though, we don't. It is a little bulky in the back, which could mean it's using some kind of DLP, probably just improving on the existing tech using the lasers for improved resolutions or such.
Another really cool bit of tech came from Belkin, a new iPod accessory for recording.
SanDisk released some new storage devices, one of the exceptions to improving the existing. Smaller with more space can keep on coming. They released the crossfire flashdrive with 8GB of space and 64GB and 72GB SSDs. Way exciting.
And just because this is the dumbest product in the world at present (probably for a long time too), TASER International just unveiled the TASER MPH (Music Player Holster). What. The. F. When is someone going to be walking around with a taser wishing they could listen to their tunes. Well screw anyone that does. Death to anyone that want's a music score to tase people to.
And thanks to Engadget and everyone else for hooking up the updates.
