Gadgets: CES Day Three. More Tech.

Posted January 9, 2008 10:51 AM

Today's news on the CES front:

Sling showed its SlingCatcher and SlingModem, scheduled for release in Q2, which works well for them and us because apparently the SlingCatcher crashed a couple times, while also having sluggish menus and a generally unfinished look and feel.

Samsung presented it's 31-inch and 14-inch OLED's, showing up Sony's 27-inch prototype and 11-inch production sets. Samsung says they have no production plans, but that's a big "yet" seeing as Sony already has their OLED products open for sale. They also showed an HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc Combo DVD player. They've got home entertainment market under wraps. They even have a set-up for 3D capable plasmas, meaning you'll be watching movies in 3D soon. So freaking tight.

Server providers AT&T, Microsoft, and NBC announced that they are working on solutions against P2P piracy and are opening up the option of filtering at the network level. How about buh-bye! Unfiltered networks would take over in a second. The "pirates" are the ones that are spending all day at their computer, fueling the digital economy of the web, etc. Hopefully they do filter though, then some new companies can spring up and offer real customer service. No one needs more corporate big brother in their lives when they have so much already.

Art Lebedev and the new Optimus Maximus keyboard kick ass. Each individual key has an OLED screen embedded in it, showing the function of the key and looking whatever way you choose. Completely customizable. The $460 price tag is a little steep, but you understand you're paying for a luxury item.

LG.Philips showed it's massive 52-inch multi-touch display. Coming in with a 1920 x 1080 capable screen and rocking an infrared image sensor that receives data about hand placement and movement over the screen, and is capable of doing all kinds of gesture and area recognition functions from two separate touch points. They have it going with Google Earth, but it'll be awesome once they start in on other applications. Music editing would be amazing. A sensor-based MIDI wouldn't be too shabby for starters. Of course they could put every instrument conceivable on screen, completely interactive electronic music composition. And the best part is it'll only be the software you need to start things up, no mess of cables and adapters and microphones to deal with. Hopefully soon. Here's a video of the Earth browsing:

And hopefully you stayed to read everything because any gamers NEED to look at this now.Right now.
