Gadgets: Old School Revamped

Posted January 4, 2008 1:21 PM

Talk about old school! This must be where that crazy russian got the idea to make a game full of falling blocks. In fact all of those old game programmers were crazy. How could you not be when you're involved in revolutionizing the use of computers and the newly developed consoles. In fact we were too, crazy for the games not crazy. You guys remember busting out the Atari, dropping some asteroids or battlezone. Or maybe you waited till NES Nintendo came out and started in on mr. mario himself. What we're getting at is just how fun those games were. Not so much for their graphics (obviously) but for their uniqueness and simplicity, recognizable now with the graphics of todays games.

The bit that sucks about those games is that it's so hard to find working consoles nowadays, at least ones that don't have an ugly price tag on them. Lucky for all of us with any aptitude for PC's we still have those games available, and for free. We can download an emulator for most any system of the past with emulators in progress being prepared for newer systems like Xbox and Playstation 2. You can get the ROM's at places like ROM Hustler and ROM Bomb.

The way it works is that you download and install the emulator, browse the ROM's and download those, and open the ROM's with your emulator. That's it. Just about every old game has a ROM you can find somewhere, which means that you really never have to look around for someone that has a fully functional piece of hardware again.

And as a little bonus for you NES Mario fans: 2chan Mario. (it's the second link from the top, syobon-action.zip) Play it as if it's the original mario game, secrets and all, for the most fun.
