CES Day Three. More Tech.

Posted January 9, 2008 10:51 AM

Today's news on the CES front:

Sling showed its SlingCatcher and SlingModem, scheduled for release in Q2, which works well for them and us because apparently the SlingCatcher crashed a couple times, while also having sluggish menus and a generally unfinished look and feel.

Samsung presented it's 31-inch and 14-inch OLED's, showing up Sony's 27-inch prototype and 11-inch production sets. Samsung says they have no production plans, but that's a big "yet" seeing as Sony already has their OLED products open for sale. They also showed an HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc Combo DVD player. They've got home entertainment market under wraps. They even have a set-up for 3D capable plasmas, meaning you'll be watching movies in 3D soon. So freaking tight.

Server providers AT&T, Microsoft, and NBC announced that they are working on solutions against P2P piracy and are opening up the option of filtering at the network level. How about buh-bye! Unfiltered networks would take over in a second. The "pirates" are the ones that are spending all day at their computer, fueling the digital economy of the web, etc. Hopefully they do filter though, then some new companies can spring up and offer real customer service. No one needs more corporate big brother in their lives when they have so much already.

2008 CES Lowdown On Comcast And Others

Posted January 8, 2008 10:00 AM

Okay we get it, Comcast offers faster internet at an affordable price. They have the largest on-demand selection with about 90% of the material begin free. And now apparently that's all going to get WAY better. Introducing Comcast 3.0: it's faster. Unveiled this morning at the Consumer Electrics Show, it's going to offer even more in the way of on-demand, speed (with the new network of fiber optic cables), and, still, a portable DVR/DVD player (talked up yesterday at Panasonic's keynote) to carry around TV shows. And that's about it.

Old School Revamped

Posted January 4, 2008 1:21 PM

Talk about old school! This must be where that crazy russian got the idea to make a game full of falling blocks. In fact all of those old game programmers were crazy. How could you not be when you're involved in revolutionizing the use of computers and the newly developed consoles. In fact we were too, crazy for the games not crazy. You guys remember busting out the Atari, dropping some asteroids or battlezone. Or maybe you waited till NES Nintendo came out and started in on mr. mario himself. What we're getting at is just how fun those games were. Not so much for their graphics (obviously) but for their uniqueness and simplicity, recognizable now with the graphics of todays games.

Digital People Mind Control

Posted December 13, 2007 11:14 AM

Too bad it isn't the real kind (not really big brother!), but soon you guys will be playing video games solely based on thought. Sega and NeuroSky are teaming up to create games and toys that read and measure brain waves so they can in turn be controlled by them. That's right mind control. It's pretty simple right now, still at the stage where activity is measured along a single axis though signal strength allows for some variations on the axis. So far the program that runs the mind control only involves lifting, dropping, and pushing around objects on a map (read experience) but for the real bang on mind control you have to go to the big dogs.

Digital Jingles Every Which Way

Posted December 7, 2007 9:09 AM

mp_greatestgadget_f.jpgTis the season... for a history lesson! Not really though, more of a comparison between then and now concerning some technology that people used to get along fine without. That's right, telephones. In 1959 we had the Western Electric 500 telephone, then came touch tone, then cordless and now of course we've wireless.

Wireless phones have turned each human into an epicenter for communication, receiving calls from any location at any hour. Unlike the WE 500, which by 1955 had only innovated beyond 5 new colors, there are a plethora of cell phone and pda choices for you to pick from. Since phones and other gadgets are such great guy gifts we thought a cell phone selection would make for some good holiday shopping.

It's Your Choice Dawg

Posted December 6, 2007 10:05 AM

Alright guys this is a warning as well as a hook up: video games kick ass. Even better is that they've gone into a realm of gaming that is constantly mind-blowing. For instance the new game Assassin's Creed for Xbox360 is honestly so amazing it's definitely the number one game worth getting (make sure you get the console to match). Then there is the Wii, today's technology with a classic touch. If you have other consoles and not a Wii you are seriously missing out plus apparently the Wii is good for your health. At the very least play some Metroid on it before you start to say you don't like it. As for the PlayStation 3, well it's just an insane piece of hardware and tech (with a price tag to match). Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is amazing if you like racing games, but really other than that it's just a matter of you deciding whether you'd rather have an Xbox360 or the PS3, but one thing to remember: Halo 3 is Xbox.

Just like the hunt for gifts, the first Manhunt is just a taste of what you're in for this Christmas. Either one of them a perfect guy gift in itself, the first having been banned in several countries and this second one supposedly being better/worse. Better if you're a twisted mother that likes to actually kill people (but not really). Supposedly there is a crack that opens Manhunt 2's violence and gore up to where it was originally going to be. Check it out if you're looking for that great gift. It's one of those go big or go home kind of things, why else would you play it?

Telenav GPS Navigator: If you hate asking for directions, buy it

Posted November 21, 2007 8:16 AM

box_genericscreen_00.jpg

Getting lost sucks. But asking for directions sucks more.

Telenav must be a company created by someone just like me. Their GPS Navigator is a simple piece of software you add to your cell phone. With it, you get turn-by-turn directions, rerouting around traffic jams and all sorts of other fun stuff, like the cheapest nearby gas and available Wi-Fi access points.

If you have a Blackberry, all you need is the software. It costs $99 for a year.

If you have a Treo, you'll need a little GPS receiver. That costs another $99 - it connects via Bluetooth.

Telenav lists all supported cell phones and service providers on their site.

I've had the Treo version for about 10 days now. It works beautifully, steering me from a rentacar counter to a client's office without incident. My only complaint is the GPS receiver, which I dropped within 2 hours of purchase. It didn't break, but I was pretty pissed when I thought I'd wrecked it. Hey, Palm, get a clue and add GPS to the Treo, will you?!

A Friend For Accidents and Morons Alike

Posted November 8, 2007 9:04 AM

Whatever women may say, guys do know something as painful as giving birth to a child and that's losing one. iPods and iPhones may seem like nothing, but they can be the world, at least the companionship of the iPod and its endless musical accompaniment. I'm still not quite hip to the jive surrounding the iPhone. That's a lot of money to be carrying around in a pocket, especially on those nights when you're actively...active (drunk?) and you still have to make phone calls, likely lots of them. Still, holding something like that is risky business.

Wiiality Gaming

"Wii would like to play" has to be something all you guys have heard running across the TV more than a few times. Paying attention to it was a little harder with graphics that don't quite compare to the Xbox 360 or PS3, not to mention those weird controllers. But while those two powerhouse consoles do have graphics that blow your mind (i.e. any game), they both lack one thing that Nintendo's Wii does offer: a physical, interactive gaming experience.

Apple owns like no other

Steve Jobs held a special event today presenting Apple's productions and plans concerning the iPod and the digital music movement. Apparently Apple is owning, or at least beginning to, in sales of music. How about throwing out some facts and figures, courtesy of Ryan Block over at engadget, so everyone can get an idea: 600 million copies of iTunes distributed, over 3 billion songs purchased on iTunes, and 95 million TV shows purchased. Freaking amazing, but I guess it makes sense seeing as 32% of the music sales last year were solely digital.

Be an angel and play Halo 3

Posted August 24, 2007 9:36 PM

It looks like it's going to be an early Christmas this year guys, three months to be exact so start saving up. The finished Halo 3 code was released by Bungie Studios to manufacturers to start kicking out the retail versions. It's got all the crazy graphics and weapons and storyline that's come to be expected from Halo, but with a surprise addition, a versatile multiplayer map editor called the Forge, which lets you tinker with everything save basic level geometries. According to Brad Shoemaker over at Gamespot the Forge is one-part level editor and one-part Garry's Mod from Half-life 2, which sounds like it'll make for some insane raging multiplayer showdowns. The expected release date is September 25th and can be bought in-store just about everywhere. However if dealing with a mob doesn't sound too enticing you can also preorder Halo 3 online. Take a quick peek at the madness you're in for.

How To Fly An R/C Helicopter: Try Drugs

Posted August 9, 2007 3:59 PM

"It's okay, man. If there's one thing I know, it's how to drive when I'm stoned. It's like, you know your perspective's f--ked, so you just gotta let your hands work the controls as if you're straight." -- Zeke, Heavy Metal

31Lt7Gxmril. Aa250

Flying the best radio controlled helicopter will make you wish you were stoned. Nothing about them makes sense. Flying a cheap one will make you think you're stoned.

The Reflex Micro Helicopter is marginally better than, say, the average $35 R/C helicopter. That's probably because it costs around $60, instead. Battery life is considerably better - I was able to send mine buzzing around the office for 30 minutes at a time. The radio range sucks, I'm afraid - no more than 10 feet. After that the rotors stop spinning and you plunge from the sky like you're in a bad typical Rambo movie.

After several hours of in-depth research, here's what I discovered:

  1. Assume that the device is some kind of drunk simulator. Every time you take off, it'll behave differently, flying backwards, forwards and sideways according to the position of the moon, whether the air conditioning is on, etc..
  2. Follow the instructions about trim. One bad landing will knock the helicopter's trim outta whack - the next time you take off it could start spinning faster than Taz on crack.
  3. Keep spare rotor blades. The latest breed of R/C helicopter is pretty tough, but it's like buttered toast - they typically land rotor-side down.
  4. Fly it indoors.
  5. Do not fly it near your cat. The result may be a permanently deranged animal, or a completely destroyed R/C helicopter.
  6. If you lose control of it in an open layout office filled with staff, don't yell "OMG we're going down!!!!". Everyone will either ignore you or dive for the exit.
  7. When in doubt, aim for something soft that will not sue you.
  8. Don't buy the really cheap $25 ones. They're worthless. They're worse than worthless - they may be some kind of sick terrorist invention designed to put out the eyes of innocent Americans.
  9. Don't give it a name like 'Red Five'. It just makes you look like a dork. If you have to give your shiny new helicopter a name, consider something like 'Mattel's Revenge' or 'Going Nowhere' or 'OMFG'.
  10. Don't let your friends fly it. They'll just wreck it, leading to years of bad feelings between you. Instead, buy them their own and let them wreck that one. Or give them yours when it's damaged and you have to replace it.

Co-Inventor Of Remote Control Passes

Posted February 21, 2007 7:41 AM

B000Cs1Tle.01. Sclzzzzzzz Sl210 It's a sad day in Guyville as we mourn the loss of inventor, Robert Adler, co-creator of the greatest guy gift known to man, the remote control. Not that I'm that old, but I do remember the times where as a kid I'd have to get up to manually change the channels and adjust the volume. Frankly, it really stunk. It wasn't because the remote control hadn't yet been invented, it was because it was such a fantastic device, my old man used to hide it so the kids (mainly me) wouldn't break it. Things have changed quite a bit over the years and remote control technology has been drastically upgraded since that Zenith Space Command was born in 1956.

Video Games Good For Your Health

Apparently action video games change the way our brains process visual information. Play video games, lose glasses. Home Fire Safety Gadgets

B0007Zyu7C.01. Sclzzzzzzz Sl210 V1136930395 You can never be too safe at the old household, right? You likely have smoke detectors coming out the ying yang, but do you have the all important CO (carbon monoxide) alarm system? CO is an invisible and odorless poisonous gas that is a killer. It's also the number one cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in the U.S. What has to be amongst the greatest priority in possible gifts for him should be the gift of life. The Kidde Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm is battery operated and uses the Nighthawk electrochemical CO sensor to make sure nobody in the household is sucking up deadly fumes.

Six Megapixels For Two Hundies!

Posted January 15, 2007 6:55 AM

Elph Well it's a hair more than that, actually, but remember when digital technology was three times that amount for a mere 2.2 megapixel camera? It wasn't all that long ago either. I would try to blow up those images to make movie posters and they'd look grainy and awful and I'd find myself going back to film cameras out of frustration. The Canon PowerShot Digital Elph camera gives you not only a great and high powered image at a very affordable price, but it's essentially a no-brainer camera to operate. We do suggest boning up on all of the great features (i.e. read the instruction manual this time brainiac) such as built in auto red-eye reduction, movie mode with high-quality images at up to 60 frames per second, night snapshot, and enjoy the 2.5 inch LCD display with 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen.

Quest For the Perfect Shave

Posted January 12, 2007 4:54 AM

Fogless Mir As reported in Wall Street Journal Online, a product that we felt worth mentioning that makes a great gift for the men of the household is the Zadro LED Lighted Fogless Mirror. As we all know, men need to have that great steam to really loosen up those tough whiskers and if you're like me, your five o'clock shadow begins to rear its ugly head around nine a.m. It's been a struggle for as long as we can remember, however, because the steamier we get our bathrooms, the foggier the mirror.

Pure Digital = Pure Genius

Posted December 20, 2006 9:16 AM

If you have kids you are probably accustomed to the usual nagging from the wife of, "honey, did you remember to bring the mini-dv camera for Sally's recital?!" Subconsciously you absolutely remembered to purposely forget it because you have no desire to deal with the mini dv tapes and transferring them over to a DVD format or find your fire wire cable to import it into your system so you can then burn a DVD of it. So you explain to your wife that while you forgot the mini-dv cam you did remember to bring your digital camera to shoot some stills.

CAN'T WE PARK OUR OWN CARS?!

Posted December 18, 2006 8:32 PM

Lexus

Toyota/Lexus has unveiled and unleashed it's self-parking system upon North America and the world and I separate the two because there are extra safety precautions in the U.S. to avoid potential litigation that have to do with additional braking systems, etc. My brother recently purchased the new Lexus LS 460 L and bragged about the parking system. I asked if he'd used it and found it useful. He had never really used the system as he still found it a bit complicated considered himself a good parker. The way the system works is you drive past a parking spot traveling no faster than 12 miles per hour. The rear and front sonar sensors detect the cars and the gap between. You put the car in reverse and it activates a rear camera.

Cable TV Only A Mouse Click Away

Posted December 14, 2006 5:54 PM

Imagine if there was technology out there that gave you the ability to watch your digital cable outside of your home. Assuming you had digital cable and were stuck at work, or were stuck out of town and your beloved sports team was playing a huge game, you'd be relegated to looking at the updating box scores wishing you could tune in.

When the Lights Go Out

Posted December 7, 2006 12:39 PM

Black & Decker StormStation

Okay, sure we live in uncertain times in an uncertain world where earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and ay, geeze, the threat of terrorism always looms. It doesn't mean I'm going to run out and build a bomb shelter and erect a pair of super canons to defend my home from evil doers. What it does mean is that I want to keep emergency food, water and batteries on hand to make sure I've got a few days of goods available just in case something happens. I went through the 1994 Northridge quake and was completely unprepared for that. Hell I ran around in circles screaming and naked expecting to see Jesus at any second, and that's not an exaggeration at all. An extremely handy item to have on hand in case of emergency and an item we strongly recommend as the ultimate gift for the head of the household is the Black & Decker StormStation If the man of the house doesn't have this handy item that lights up when the power goes out, plus has a 12-volt charger, AND has a 25-watt power inverter, not to mention AM/FM/TV and weather frequencies, then he simply doesn't have it all. We think this is a great gift for every guy. Man want power...man need power...man got power. Ug.

All I Want For Christmas is a Plasma TV

Posted November 25, 2006 4:29 PM

Panasonic TH-42 Plasma HDTV

Gone are the days when those crystal clear gorgeous plasma TV’s cost the same as a sturdy three year-old Toyota with fewer than 70,000 miles on it. Plasma’s, LCD’s and DLP’s were the future and the future is now. Over the past two years we’ve been noticing that great quality picture plasma’s have been coming way down in price. We’ve seen some come down as far as the fifteen hundred dollar range for 42 inch screens. In the not-so-old days, Mitsubishi and Sony were the standard for best picture quality in the world of TV. That’s not the case any longer.

The Spirit of Gaming

gaming

The E3 was quite an experience with mile long lines lasting for hours for folks just to be able to sneak a peek at the newest stars coming out for the holidays, Play Station 3, the Nintendo Wii, and the Xbox 360. There are countless blogs and opinions out there that will inform you that the Wii’s motion control sensing capability is better than the Playstation’s, which is why Sony only had one playable unit on the floor. The Wiimote is clearly the more advanced unit – at least during this beta test phase, however where they end up during actual distribution is still up for grabs. You’ll also likely hear that the PS3’s and the XBOX360’s graphics blow the Wii’s out of the water.

Swiss Army Money Clip & Knife - Silver Alox

Posted August 29, 2006 2:44 PM

SAmoneyclip.jpg What is it about the popularity and unbelievable success of the Swiss Army products? I did a little digging on the company and realized that company founder, Carl Elsener, designed the early products himself in the company’s infancy. The original Swiss Army Knife is over 100 years old and they produce and ship more than 34,000 of those little knives with the funky cross on them each and every day. So one would think, well there must be something to be said for a guy who has intense vision and grows his company the good old-fashioned way, through determination and hard work. The real kicker, however, is that all of the Swiss Army stuff is specifically designed to withstand treacherous conditions (hello, Switzerland…freaking cold as a witch’s tee-tee) like ice, snow, hail, floods, etc.

Dalvey Explorer Compass

Posted August 29, 2006 2:43 PM

opencompas(prod).jpg There is something about the elegance of the pocket watches of the late eighteen hundreds that have always held great interest to this reviewer. Something about the vision of a three piece suit a monocle, a top-hat and a chrome watch on a chain in one of the many finely sewn pockets that makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Perhaps it reminds me of my immigrant great grandfathers that I never had a chance to meet. The Dalvey Explorer Compass with its pocket watch design and excellent craftsmanship possesses these same fine qualities and design features.

Swiss Army Golf Tool & Callaway Ball Set

Posted August 29, 2006 11:39 AM

swissarmy_golfset.jpg Golf…there should be a song about the greatness of the game. Let's face it; golf is a billion plus dollar industry that has guys obsessing about whacking a tiny ball around. More curse words have been invented on the links than in any other place in the world in the history of our human race. It's a lovely walk in the park ruined by a teeny white dimpled ball. Oh, did I mention that I obsess about playing a round three days before I even get to the course? We love the game. Why fight it? We need all of our cool stuff too. We need the Dry Joy shoes, the pro-bag, and the best balls in the business as well as tees, markers, and a divot fixer. Basically only the whole shebang will do. If only we could get one device that had the majority of these contents…if only Swiss Army would develop a golf tool set that perhaps had a sleeve of balls, we would be half way there. What's that? They did?

Dalvey Micro Flashlight

Dalvey claims that their Micro Flashlight is embedded with energy-efficient technology that makes this little keychain gizmo visible over one mile away. Well, we here over at Guyville.com call that a challenge. Armed with a buddy and two cell phones we patiently waited until dusk became dark and paced off one mile with our cars on a straight, flat road. The conversation went a little like this…
