The footmen of royalty and aristocrats would deliver their masters' calling cards to the servants of prospective hosts to announce an upcoming visit.
Beginning in London, the use of trade cards soon followed. This precursor of the modern business card served as advertising or a map to the merchant's store, as street address as we know them today had not yet been conceived.
