The first batch of modern Pilsner beer was unveiled on October 5, 1842 in the city of Pilsen, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Prior to the development of Pilsner, Bohemian beers were dark and cloudy. Sick of this lack luster beer, the citizens of Pilsen recruited Bavarian brewer, Josef Groll, to develop a new, better beer. The result was a clearer, golden beer made from new malts, soft water, noble hops, and Bavarian lagering technique.
